The Smurf Report: Walking Tall
01/16/2005
I was looking forward to seeing this film, especially after having recently seen Welcome to the Jungle. The film sounded quite promising, was in action film, it featured The Rock, and it was based on a true story.
As usual, The Rock was brilliant, but that was about all that had going for it. The action was passe, the film they’ve been based on a true story, but at a guess I’d say someone took creative license to the extreme!
The one thing, in an action film featuring The Rock, he generally expect more than one explosion in the whole film!
Add to that the fact that none of the characters were properly introduced…
All in all, it meant I finished watching the film and was left wondering:
1) What was the point?
2) Is that it?
3) Why did I bother?
The films one hour and 23 minutes long, but felt much shorter. Now normally, it’s a good thing when a film feels much shorter than it actually is, but in this case it just made the film feel rushed.
I think that was actually the problem, the whole film had a feeling of being rushed about it. The introductions to the characters were too short, the action was too brief, the plot was to hurried…
Had the film being longer, at the action be more explosive, had the characters and story been better developed, then it might have worked.
As it is, a film that introduces its lead character, shows his reunion with his family, then the reunion with his friends, being assaulted, left for dead, taking a hospital, completing recovery, taking revenge, being arrested, having his trial, being acquitted, and then being made Sheriff, all within the first 45 minutes of the film… it just makes the pacing or wrong!
Needless to say, not one I’ll be watching again in a hurry!
