First off, I guess I have to make comment to yesterday’s entry…
:saythat:

And that’s pretty much all I have to say on the matter :-pb

It was a night of endings yesterday, I ate the last tub of ice cream in the house :-((, it was the last ever episode of Friends and the last in the series of American idol…

I liked Friends when it first came out, I used to watch it all the time, but after the first couple of series it got predictable, tired and the jokes just weren’t funny any more, so I gave up… But since it was the last ever episode, I decided to have a look at it and see what it was like…

The jokes haven’t improved any, so I now know I haven’t missed anything by not watching it for the past 7-8 years!

Yet still I was quite upset when it ended… I guess it’s an end of an era, and like it or loathe it, in some ways it’s become a part of our culture. It gave rise to a whole range of hair cuts for women desperate to look like Jennifer Aniston (still haven’t worked out why anyone would want to…) and brought us that ever popular greeting of “Hey you!” and the memorable chat-up line of “How you doin’?”

But I think most of all it was the fact that you could feel the emotion throughout the entire episode, even when the cast weren’t supposed to be sad, there was still a sadness coming through to the viewer… But then they have been working together for 10 years, now not only do they have to go their separate ways, they have to start looking for work again, and after playing the same part for 10 years, that could end up being quite tough to do, especially if they want to do something totally different and try and learn to stretch themselves again!

Then came American Idol… There was a similar feeling throughout that too, an ending for all of the finalists, and a sure beginning for only one.

It’s the first American Idol I’ve seen so far, but I quite enjoyed it… I preferred the format to the original British version of the program… But last night I was quite disappointed in it.

They were in a different location to usual, and on the first part of the show, the sound was terrible! Bit contestants sounded screechy, the music just didn’t sound right, and I hated the two songs that are going to be the winning single.

After all the time and effort they have put in, they get stuck with two pretty dull and repetitive songs, which seems a bit silly, but maybe that’s just me. I have to admit, whilst I didn’t think either song sounded much on the first show, they both sounded much better on the performance on the second show. Still dull and repetitive, but they did show off their voices well, which was something at least!

It was nice to see the whole 12 performing together again, and on the whole, they all looked like they were enjoying themselves.

They never did say how close the voting had been for the winner, but I’m guessing it was pretty close, since they were both very good. I have to admit, I still think that Diana DeGarmo should have won; she had a very powerful and consistent voice throughout the competition and appeared to be enjoying every second of it. Fantasia Barrino, on the other hand, has a very unusual voice, although not as powerful as Diana DeGarmo, but to my ear it made her somewhat less versatile in the style of songs that she could manage to perform.

Still, on the plus side, the runner up usually manages to get somewhere anyway, and I tend to think that not having the burden of a Pop Idol record deal may be a benefit rather than a hindrance, or at least that appears to be the case for the British Pop Idol and Pop Star shows here… Up until now, almost all the winners have faded into obscurity, whilst the runners up who have managed to pursue a career in the music industry are not only still alive and kicking, but actually going from strength to strength… Much of which I put down to them having a bigger say in their career than the Pop Idol/Pop Star winners appear to have…!

And that will be the end of good Friday night television for a couple of months, since the new tortures of Big Brother series 5 begin this week :-((

I don’t can’t cope!
