…Dancing with the Queen of New Orleans…
10/26/2003
Ok, so I don’t normally do this, given that politics bore me and the royal family tends to repulse me.
But I’ve got a bee in my bonnet (pretty pink bonnet though isn’t it?)
I never cease to be amazed at the British Royal family. They still try to portray themselves as perfect, infallible and blameless of everything, still firmly entrenched in the country’s religion. But I am forced to ask myself, who do they think they are fooling? Or more to the point, who are they trying to fool, the public, or themselves?
Lets face it, if even half the womanising and affairs of various royals over the past 50 years are true, then it’s safe to say they are far from perfect.
There has been a great deal of commotion over a letter that was supposedly written by Princess Diana just after her divorce, and about a year before her death stating that she suspected that she would be killed to make way for hubby to marry whatserface.
She died about 6 years ago, yet he hasn’t married her. Rumour has it that the Queen won’t let him (good for her). Yet it amazes me, if that is true and the Queen won’t let them marry, then why on earth is she allowed to do everything other than marry him. As I recall she is there with the family for events such as Christmas day, yet Fergie gets to send the kids whilst she stays at home with a microwave meal and a few videos.
Something is seriously wrong with that.
But then I find something seriously wrong with the whole set-up. Diana’s death seems just a little too convenient to have been entirely accidental, the fires were still smouldering when hubby suddenly found the new love of his life to try and introduce to the nation (who I’m happy to say were having none of it!)
Then there is the purpose of the royal family. I’m never entirely sure what it is they actually do, since the Government makes all the decisions and has all the real power, whilst the monarchy is a symbolic figurehead, that doesn’t appear to have any real power left.
The only purpose I know about is the law making process, after the governments make the laws; they are passed for royal approval. But again, this is more a tradition than anything else; the royals automatically accept them. There was great debate in my law class what would happen if the law was rejected, whether the Queen still had that power, or whether the Government would just laugh and approve it themselves cutting the royal family out of the loop all together.
We were pretty split on that debate.
I understand the purpose behind the royal family, they are supposed to be in place to look after the interests of the people, and ensure that the government doesn’t take advantage (or at least, as far as I can tell, that was the original purpose of the Royal line remaining once the Government was established). But it has to be said that on the whole, I doubt any of them (with the odd exception) has even the faintest idea about the life of the average person, never mind what is in their best interests.
They and the “common” person live separate lives that are poles apart. What do they, what could they know about our lives? And if they don’t know, how can the protect our interests, and if they can’t do that, what are they for, beyond being a figurehead for people to place their faith in?
