Ooooohhhhh, I think I’m in love…

Before anyone sits there reading this thinking “Ahh that’s so sweet”, trust me it’s not. Falling in love with inanimate objects is closer to the tragic than the sweet. However falling in love with a piece of software is even worse. But after installing a new operating system (Linux redhat 9.0 if you care) it was love at first sight.

So I rushed home from work and started on my computer. I now have a sony laptop with a dual boot system for windows XP (Urgh) and Linux (come ‘ere shugah!) with a third partition setup for intersystem file sharing (yes I’m turning into such a geek!)

Now if I could just get the third partition to show up in either operating system I’d be happy.

Now there is a point to this… Trust me.

Two years ago my cousin got married, and I took a load of photos. A few days later I erased my backup CD’s ready to create a new backup. Unfortunately, the hard drive chose that moment to suffer a fatal head crash wiping the entire drive. No files and no backup (and no photos) I was understandably devastated (it took 18 months of intensive therapy to return me to the stable individual I am today… Should I have asked for a refund?)

Anyways, I never used those CD’s again; I rang around various computer places to see if they could recover the data. Tried about 10 places, only 1 said that it could be done. It would have to be sent away to a lab where men in white coats (hmm, sounds like the clinic I had to go to!) would dissect it (yep almost identical in fact) and would have to use electron microscopic techniques (or something like that) to recreate the data. Which would take several months and a few thousand pounds per disc!

So imagine my delight when I put one of the discs into the cd drive last night only to find that linux could retrieve all the data without a white coat in sight. Wheeeee!

So I’m on data retrieval duty today, I’ve lost one disc of data, I use it for something else by mistake *sob* but there wasn’t much important on it, just my downloaded programs. It only took three weeks to download them all again. But if I can get everything else I’ll be more than happy.

Well this is overly excitable geek central over and out :-D
