So am I being sacked or what???

05/30/2003

Well it’s been a strange week. Anyone who reads my journal regularly (hmm, are there actually such people? Surely they’re not so bored?) I digress. I’ve been trying to get the works network and broadband up and running (with little success) I’ve finally got each to work independently, but neither system will talk to the other. So Tuesday we got network specialists in to try and fix it. I’m kind of pleased that it was all set up properly and they couldn’t see why it wouldn’t work either (My first network and I did it right…Yeah me!)

Why me?

I’m asking myself that a lot lately.

I’m paid to do the technical stuff at work, but we’re having to pay to get a network expert to sort out the 4 months of mess I’ve managed to create whilst trying to set the thing up *sob*

Selective Insurance

I was reading in the free paper today that apparently insurance companies are using information from marketing and credit agencies to find out more about potential customers. They are then using this information to increase the insurance premiums.

How criminal?

Got this from RooRaaah’s post yesterday. I thought it was quite good. (That and I like being an angel)

are you a criminal?

Angel Hmm? it seems you really are almost too good to be true. Most people don’t even know most of those things are illegal - you must have an excellent knowledge of the law to be that perfect. Or maybe you’re a policeman?
Based on your answers, we have calculated the maximum penalty for your crimes*:
Years in prison: 0 Potential fine: 0

Shoot me… Somebody…Please?

Could the day get any worse? My day off and I’m away to the dentist this afternoon. Fine in itself, except for a phone call about 10 minutes before I leave the house to tell me that the new network router had arrived at work, would I come in for a few hours today instead of Friday. Well I thought, it’s not so bad, train straight from the dentist, couple of hours to plug it in, do all the settings then program the tills for a bit just to make sure the network is stable and working before I leave. Sure why not. I got there for 3:20 and finally dragged myself out the office at 7:50 (so much for 2 hours!), which would have been ok, if the network was any better than it had been when I arrived. But after many more hours on the phone to various technical support people, we are still in the situation where the network will not talk to broadband, broadband sits in a corner and sulks if the network is on, and I’m sitting in another corner crying my eyes out while my boss has a nervous breakdown.

Another day another…pound??

05/20/2003

Well another joyous day at work today. I had to go in to sort out the network and broadband. But I finally made some progress. We (technical support and myself) managed to get the broadband set-up and running, but it didn’t like the network. So when I went home last night we had a router box that wouldn’t talk to the network access point, and network adapter that didn’t like the router, the router wouldn’t talk to the network unless it went through a third party and the network was pointedly ignoring the router. (Ok I now feel like I’m back in high school!)

Ok, what is it with begging or trying to con money out of people?

I was accosted by someone selling Big Issue on the way into work this morning, then on the way home another guy wanting to “borrow” 40p for his bus fare and “he’d asked just EVERYONE”. When I said no, and pointed out I had a return bus ticket in answer to his “Well how are YOU going to get home then?” question I watched him wander off, ask another couple of people and then pop into the shop to buy some food. Then confronted by another nasal snivelling individual. This time armed with a vial of insulin. The story? He’d just taken his insulin, and was scared because of an attack he had suffered because of it. He HAD to get home to his mother so he could eat something and this was all the money he had” *shows me about 70p in coppers and 5p coins*. This might have been more convincing had I not seen the man leaning against the wall and reading a newspaper tell him to try me, and scowl at him when he said no. It might also have been more use had the vial been empty, had there not been three other suspicious youths in the area working a similar scam, and had I not been a little suspicious at the fact that the insulin had actually CAUSED the attack and that he had to eat something to counteract the insulin.

What a day!
Make that what a week!

So far three people I know have died this week. One I found out about on Friday, the other two I only found out about today. One has to have an autopsy because they aren’t sure what happened. He was only in is early 70’s and was always in good health until the last year or so. He has been on a downward spiral ever since his wife died a few years ago. I guess he didn’t want to have to go on without her. He was only in is early 70’s and was always in good health until the last year or so.

You are not alone!

After reading RooRaaah’s journal entry, I thought it was a good place to start today.

The Internet breaks down barriers. It gives everyone the opportunity to meet and get to know people from all over the world. Different religions, different cultures, different backgrounds. Diversity is the spice of live and it doesn’t get much more diverse than the Internet.

Another sleepy post

05/15/2003

Well my first day back to work went better than expected. It was good to see everyone again, for two weeks off it felt like about six months. Loads of new staff (happens everytime I`m off work) I don`t know where they get them all.

Broadband is still not working (suprise, suprise) but the network is still going strong, and is turning out to be quite stable (yeah me - it`s my first network). So two hours on the phone to technical support for broadband settings, another hour of automatic router self-configuration and guess what? Yep, still no broadband. So it`s another 5:30 start, and back to work for another chat to the people at technical support. Once I get that up and running, I just have to figure how on earth I tie they thing into the wireless network so I can give 2 of the 6 computers their own static IP address for external dial-in. Not a clue where to even start on that one, so looks like I`m in for a fun-filled weekend of research.
